Global Standards for Agentic AI

As SAP accelerates the integration of agentic AI across our enterprise software portfolio, we recognize that coordinated, standardized practices are essential for widespread adoption and the success of connected intelligence. Standards enable AI agents — both within SAP and across our customers' organizations — to communicate seamlessly, share critical context, and execute transactions with confidence and security.

Whether you're implementing AI agents, integrating with SAP solutions, or shaping industry standards, you'll find resources, updates, and opportunities to contribute to standardization initiatives such as the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) or Agent2Agent (A2A).

SAP is dedicated to actively participating in, contributing to the development, and implementing AI-related standards. We consider these standards as strategic instruments that drive seamless interoperability and accelerate innovation. It allows us to strengthen the broader ecosystem and deliver greater value to our customers.

Why Standards Matter at SAP

We believe in open source software and open standards and contributing back as an obligation as stated in the SAP Open Source Manifesto. Agentic AI is evolving rapidly with different (competing) drivers and technology stacks. Without standardization, we are running the risk of fragmentation and a lack of interoperability. Besides mitigating these risks, open standards make agents safer and faster to build. This ensures SAP’s “Agent-First” strategy remains scalable.

By establishing clear product, commercial, and legal frameworks for data and transactional access through Model Context Protocol (MCP) and A2A, SAP signals its willingness to integrate with a diverse range of AI solutions and third-party agents — encouraging innovation among partners and developers while enhancing the overall value of SAP’s offering. SAP is also looking into contributing and adopting other standards such as SKILL.md. In the following article, we will focus on the standardization efforts driven jointly with the Agentic AI Foundation.
